Alan Shearer took his first step into football management today when he agreed a new deal with Newcastle which will make him a player-coach.
Shearer, 34, had insisted all season he would retire at the end of the current campaign but has agreed a one-year extension to his current contract after a change of heart.
The Magpies captain confirmed at a St James' Park press conference that the persistence of manager Graeme Souness and chairman Freddy Shepherd had persuaded him to play on for one more season.
Newcastle, who are in the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, are well placed to end a 50-year drought without a major trophy and Shearer said: 'The last two or three months have been great and I hope we can go on to bigger and better things.
'The spirit in the camp is fantastic and I want to be part of something which is happening here and I believe that will happen.
'It was a tough decision for me but I believe it's the right one for everyone concerned and more importantly the football club,' he told Sky Sports News.
Shearer has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season and needs only 10 more goals to surpass Jackie Milburn's 200-goal all-time club leading goalscorer record.
He is confident that he can maintain his own form for another season.
'I am doing it because I think my performances have carried on at a level which I and the manager and chairman are content with and I think I can do that for another year.'
A delighted Shepherd said: 'It's the news every fan wanted to hear and certainly the news Graeme and the board wanted to hear. I think Alan's new contract will read player-coach.'
Former England captain Shearer stressed that despite his change of heart at club level he has no plans to make himself available again for his country.
'No, that was the right decision many years ago and I think it proved to be the right one,' he added.
Shearer, explaining the thinking behind his decision, said: 'I sat down and had to analyse my performances this season. I probably haven't scored as many as last season but I feel I have contributed a lot more than I did last season or the season before.
'I had a hell of a lot of people to speak to. I spoke to managers, coaches, scouts, friends, players and players who have packed in and what came back was unanimous - they all said they felt I was playing too well to retire. I thought `I can't retire just because I've said I would'. I was perhaps a bit hasty.'
Souness revealed how he had played on Shearer's emotional attachment to the club as he set about persuading him to change his mind and play on for one more season.
Souness said: 'I'm delighted this morning and if all my signings are as good as this then I'll be extremely happy. I've said before I didn't think he was ready to pack it in.
'It's not just Alan Shearer on the pitch I want. I also want Alan around the place, he is an enormous help to me.
'I tried to get into his roots, into his head, telling him `this is your club, the club you love, and if you really love it you have got to stay here and help me for another year to be a success and help the club challenge the big boys and win things'. And he has made the right decision for all the right reasons.
'I don't believe it was such a big decision for him. He loves this club, he has a hell of a lot to offer this club - not just goals but every aspect of this club.'
Shearer has long being touted as a future Newcastle manager and his new role as a player-coach working alongside Souness and Dean Saunders looks like the first step along that road.
'Everyone knows I have started my (coaching) badges and the next step is to emphasise to the staff here that nothing changes from my side. Everything continues exactly the same,' added Shearer.
He insisted Milburn's record was not a major factor in his decision.
'I have to say it didn't. I realise what a great man Jackie Milburn was to this football club and the area but I stayed on because I think the club is moving in the right direction, not because I want to break the record. I might do that but it is not the reason I stayed on.
'I stayed on because I believe we can win things, I've seen enough in the last few months to suggest I can do that.
'Five or six weeks ago people were telling me to look at the big picture so I did, and I have to say the response from the people here - emails, faxes - has been incredible, literally thousands and I said `hang on, maybe they have a point' and sat down with my family and thought `well maybe I did come to a decision a bit too quickly.'
Asked about Newcastle's chances in the FA Cup and UEFA Cup, Shearer said: 'My intention is to win those two and go on to bigger and better things.'

小姐我已经呼呼入睡，老公还在打game。
忽然间，我被惊醒。醒来的第一个感觉，就是：“什么声音？”睡房里一阵阵的“卡拉卡拉”声，睡眼朦胧的我很努力地想：是衣柜门在响吗？是床在响吗？怎么会响呢？咦，怎么我在摇呢？

这时，老公跑进房来，紧张兮兮地说：是不是屋子在摇？你看门在动嘞。。。我从床上一跃而起，哎呀，地震啦。老公说：很厉害嘞，你看你看，都在摇呢。。。
我瞪着房门，那是蛮重的木门呢，但是却来回不停地晃着晃着。老公问：怎么样，我们要不要下楼？一连问了两三次。我看了看他，再看看自己，我们只穿着睡衣，怎么下楼？于是，只好直瞪着木门，“静观其变”，其实是不知所措。

I watch Animal planet till late last night. Was quite sad but resigned that this is the way of life and this is important to the massive food chain.
Ttwo adult male Killer Whales in pursuit of a mother and calf Gray Whale. It was an incredible sight to see the two males leaping after the Grays in perfect synchrony. After a short pursuit the two males worked as a team to block the Gray Whales' movement. They showed awesome power as the males repeatedly bashed into and body slammed the calf.
Killer Whales are the top predators of the ocean and the only natural predator of the Gray Whale. These events have been occurring for thousands of years and only recently have been filmed and studied.
The mother Gray doesn't have many defenses against the Killer Whales who are just after her calf. The mother often rolled belly up and attempted to keep her calf on her belly and out of the water. But the Killer Whales were intent on pursuing the calf and one adult female Killer Whale positioned herself in a dangerous area between the mother Gray and calf in an attempt to separate the calf. While this female stayed in-between, several other adult females rammed the calf and grabbed onto its flippers.
During this attack, the calf showed amazing resilience in its fight for life, and the terror in the eye of the calf was heartwrenching, but the Killer Whales also had several calves with them and they were learning to hunt and feed on this very important food source, not unlike wolves or lions hunting their prey. Eventually one female Killer Whale got on top of the exhausted and injured calf to finally drown it.
Guess what?! After so much action, the killer whales ONLY EAT THE LOWER JAW AND TONGUE!
