Master The Jargon
These terms are to found on labels of sun protection products. You need to know what they mean:
UVA: Ultra-violet rays of a longer wavelength that penetrate deep into the skin to damage its elasticity, giving skin a weather-beaten, wrinkled look. PA is the rating used in sun protection products for defense against UVA rays.
UVB: Shorter in wavelength than UVA rays, UVB rays give you sunburn and increased risk of skin cancer. SPF is the standard rating used for defense against UVB rays.
PABA: Para-Aminobenzoic Acid is an ingredient that is used in some, not all, sunscreens to absorb harmful UVB rays. If you have sensitive skin and eczema, avoid sunscreen products that contain PABA.
SPF: The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of a sunscreen tells you how long you can stay in the sun, wearing the product, before skin starts to burn. For example, if your skin starts to turn red after 20 minutes of sun exposure, then wearing a sunblock with a SPF 15 will give sun protection for five hours (15 x 20 minutes).
PA: In a sunscreen PA is rated by the + symbol. PA is the measure of the change (darkening) in skin pigmentation after exposure to UVA rays. The indicator for measuring protection offered in a product ranges on a scale from 1 - 8, with a protection of 1 offering the least. This is how PA ratings correspond to a product's protection capabilities against UVA: PA+ (1 - 3), PA++ (4 - 5) and PA+++ (6 - 8).
Product knowledge
Sunscreens are light years away from the mucky, gooey creams that left skin looking streaky and white. Today sunscreens can be found in all kinds of face and body products, ranging from moisturisers, foundations, lipsticks to hair conditioners and eye creams - and available in different textures to suit individual needs and preferences.
What's best for me?
Look to products that offer both UVA (PA rating) and UVB (SPF rating) protection. As ratings for UVA protection is a fairly recent development, some products donÕt indicate a PA on the product. Look for the line broad-spectrum protection, to indicate that the product offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays.
